The way George Lucas had originally written the script had each of the four story lines following each other in the same order. This way, a scene featuring John Milner would always be followed by a scene featuring Terry, which would then be followed by a scene about Steve, and Curt after that. When Lucas realized he had to cut out entire scenes to keep a reasonable running time, he reluctantly had to give up this structure. However, it was used in the sequel, American Graffiti 2 (1979).
