Wounded in a battle, Dr Strange transports himself to a hospital, where he tells Dr Palmer, "cardiac tamponade" (also known as pericardial tamponade). The pericardium is a kind of sac around the heart; normally, a small amount of fluid between the heart and the pericardium provides lubrication, allowing the heart to beat without scraping against the other structures in the chest. Cardiac tamponade means an excess amount of fluid between the heart and pericardium (in this case blood leaking out of the heart through a wound). This can put pressure on the heart, preventing it from beating, which can be fatal. The immediate treatment is to stick a needle between the heart and pericardium to remove the excess fluid. It will also be necessary to close the wound in the heart.
