Bob Dylan recalled in a 2017 interview that he visited the production in Hawaii because a former girlfriend had a role in the film. According to him, he met John Wayne and Burgess Meredith on a battleship and played some folk songs for Wayne, who enjoyed them and told him he could appear in the film if he wished to.
