Steven Soderbergh points out how noticeably brighter it is outside than it is inside in the early scene at the warehouse. He notes some directors or cinematographers wouldn't like this, that they'd attempt to balance it and make it seem more natural. Luckily his cinematographer, Ed Lachman, had been raised on New Wave films and understood what Soderbergh was going for. "I think it's an aesthetic. If it's organic to the material, it has an energy that you can't get when everything is sort of polished and set."
