The enormous wine glasses used by various characters are a reflection of the excess depicted in the movie. Originally, wine glasses were small and for sipping. Americans, who tend to be a bit brash, wanted larger glasses so that they could drink rather than sip. And from that point wine glasses began yo grow in size, making wine more of a beverage for slogging rather than to accompany something else.
