Locking undesirable civilian populations in barns and setting them afire, as shown in the movie, is a well-documented type of atrocity carried out by the Germans on the Eastern Front. It is most strongly identified with Waffen-SS units commanded by the notorious war criminals Oskar Dirlewanger and Bronislav Kaminski.
