Although the word "doll" is used in promoting the movie (and Megan is supposedly the product a toy company), Megan isn't really a doll. "Chucky" is a doll. Megan is a robot - albeit a humanoid robot. Its programming is essentially to serve as a companion and protector of its young owner, rather than being designed as a simple plaything, like a doll. That fact changes the nature of the movie. Bringing an actual, inanimate doll to life in a movie require some sort of magical or supernatural twist. But robots are designed to simulate human life, so the movie, rather than being a supernatural horror film, is actually a standard science fiction trope about a runaway robot (something dating back to 1927's silent epic "Metropolis"), and the somewhat more recent trope of dangerous A.I. (dating back at least to 1970's "Colossus: The Forbin Project" and 1984's "The Terminator").
