The first movie that cinematographer Roger Deakins has shot for writers, producers, and directors Joel and Ethan Coen, and on 35mm film, since Il Grinta (2010). He had previously become an advocate of shooting digitally and used Arri Alexa cameras on his next five movies, but he switched back to film for this movie because the Coens dislike digital cameras and thought that shooting on film suited a period piece set in 1950s Hollywood.
