One of this film's central plot points and dynamics was the relationship between Kirk and Decker after Kirk used his influence to usurp command of the Enterprise from Decker and demote him to executive officer. The same plotline and dynamic was portrayed by the captain and executive officer in the movie Mare caldo (1958), which was also directed by Robert Wise. The same movie has also been cited as an influence for Star Trek: Balance of Terror (1966).
