Originally, main villain Karl transformed into a demon-like monster during the final part of the movie. Although much time and effort was spent on special make-up effects for these scenes, MGM decided that it didn't like that because it "couldn't see the actor", so all the creature footage was cut and re-shot with Karl being only partially transformed in the final cut.
