According to a number of persons in Christopher Isherwood's social circle in Weimar-era Berlin, Jean Ross was a libertine 19-year-old flapper who firmly embraced the sexual revolution of the Jazz Age. Accordingly, she defiantly engaged in public sex as a performer in a Viennese opera. Another Berlin acquaintance, Gerald Hamilton, claimed that Ross entertained guests in the nude when they visited her apartment. Both Ross and Isherwood had specifically moved to 1930s Weimar-era Berlin because the social milieu was less repressive than conservative British society at the time.
