Actor Derek McKinnon said during a 2010 interview that the writer originally wanted him to kiss actor Ben Johnson during a scene later in the film while disguised as David Copperfield's female assistant, but McKinnon refused to do it. He said, "And I was really upset. I mean, I'm dealing with a nominated, like, you know, an Academy Award-winning star. At that point, I'd never met Ben, okay, and I was just, oh, totally freaked. And it was the 1980s, and you don't kiss another man. Not Ben Johnson." But Johnson found out about it and called him into his trailer. He said he was fine with filming the kiss and demanded to know why McKinnon wasn't. After they talked McKinnon agreed to do it. They filmed the scene, but after all that, they ended up not using it.
