The city name of Io has many possible meanings: Io is a figure in Greek mythology, a human lover of the god Zeus, perhaps symbolizing how humans are now relating to the god-like machines;; I/O stands for input/output: the signals received and put out by a system; and Io resembles the 1 and 0 of binary code. It is also the name of the Jovian moon, which happens to be the most volcanically active moon in the solar system. This may have a connection with 2001: Odissea nello spazio (1968) as in that film life on the the moon Europa is controlled by an unseen and unquantifiably technologically superior creators while Io, analogous to the world of human reality is wild and uncontrolled.
