After the final battle, two female pilots are seen briefly kissing in the background in celebration. This scene became heavily controversial in some non-American countries where the film was released. Some conservative foreign theaters went as far to censor the film. This resulted in Rise of Skywalker being the first Disney-produced film to be censored overseas. Although, both director J. J. Abrams and Disney have defended this scene. The New Mutants (2020) director Josh Boone also criticized the choice of keeping this scene in the final cut, saying that it adds nothing new to the plot.
