In Kevin Kwan's novel, there is more to the story concerning Rachel's father. In the movie, Rachel's mother told her that her father died before she was born. Nick's mother Eleanor later does a background check and finds Rachel is the product of an affair and her father is actually alive. Rachel's mother Kerry then tells her that she fled to America to escape her husband because he was an abusive drunk. These points are taken from the novel. Kerry never told Rachel's father because he did not want to break up his marriage.
