Colin Trevorrow was announced as the director in August 2015 with Derek Connolly and Jack Thorne writing the script, but Trevorrow stepped down before production began. J.J. Abrams was announced as the new director in September 2017, with Abrams and Chris Terrio writing the script. A significant amount of fans perceive that Trevorow's unmade script draft titled Duel of the Fates would had been a better movie and that Abrams ruined the script and the movie by changing the script to diminish the roles of all characters player by people of color. John Boyega stated that Duel of the Fates treated his character Finn better, on an interview.
