One of the British failings at the battle of Isandlwana was the standing order that only one ammunition box was to be opened at a time. As the boxes were closed with screws, the screws were old and rusty, and there was a shortage of screwdrivers, the posed a serious problem, especially considering how spread out the defenders were. Once the Zulu army arrived at Rorke's Drift, the defenders showed better sense. If the leadership of the British army at Isandlwana had been better up to the task, considering their size, there's a good chance that a good portion of the force would have survived the battle.
