Historically, a Paladin was a mythical court retainer of the French crown bearing a rank above that of Count. The origins go back to the 11th century and earlier, as legendary defenders against the Muslim Umayyad invasion of Europe.. They were traditionally twelve in number and their position in French folklore was like the knights of the Round Table. Essentially, they were warriors with a divinely appointed mission to destroy heretics. In more recent myth, Paladin was the name used by19th century knight-errant "Clay Alexander" Richard Boone in the western Have Gun - Will Travel (1957).
