According to October 1996 New York Times article, while working on The Fifth Element, Luc Besson was also working with screenwriter John Pogue on the script for remake of Walter Hill's cult car chase film The Driver (1978), about notorious and unstoppable getaway driver who always escapes the police and tough detective who is obsessed with catching him. 20th Century Fox were developing this remake at that time, but it ended up not getting made.
