Many of the characters (Black Panther, Star-Lord, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Rescue, among others) have masks which come and go at will mechanically during the battle. The actors have recognition clauses in their contracts which state their faces have to appear unmasked for a certain amount of time on film. The mechanical masks were an easy way to incorporate this.
