This is often incorrectly cited as the first American film to use the word "fuck". It was the first to be given an MPAA R-rating. Other than its possible use in Bosko's Picture Show (1933), the word can be heard in earlier films, including Il complesso del sesso (1967), America, America, dove vai? (1969), Ulysses (1967), David Holzman's Diary (1967), and Futz (1969), amongst others.
