Not until the sequel, The Four Musketeers (1974), is it revealed that Athos (Oliver Reed) and Milady de Winter (Faye Dunaway) were lovers in their youth. This necessitated keeping the characters out of each other's proximity during all of The Three Musketeers (1973), which was achieved, save for the final crowd scene, where both characters are present but do not interact.
