In the comics, Bruce's mental and anger issues stem from his father, Brian, abusing him and his mother during his childhood. The abuse got so bad that Brian, somewhat similar to David in this film, inadvertently killed his wife, resulting in him going to prison. Several years later, he goes to his wife's grave after being released from jail and sees Bruce, now a college student, visiting the grave. They argue, and Bruce kills his father in self-defense when Brian tries to attack and kill him.
