The American Humane Society was on-set during the scene where Ian McKellen's character Denker/Dussander attempts to burn a live domestic cat in his gas oven at home. According to The American Humane Society's "No Animals Were Harmed Database", the scene was shot in cuts using a real and an animatronic cat. A real cat is filmed from several camera angles as McKellan supposedly attempts to place it in the oven. An animatronic cat was used when the animal's legs are seen entering the oven and again when the cat is seen as a reflection in McKellen's eyeglasses, struggling to get free. A fire bar was used for the oven flame and it was kept at a safe distance from the animal. This also protected McKellen, whose character was in close proximity to touching the flames directly while attempting to trap the cat in the oven. McKellen, who liked the little orange cat a great deal, was affectionate to it off-set which thus allowed him the ease of being able to pick up the cat when in-character during the filming of the oven scene.
