While Adrian Cronauer was actually a popular Armed Forces Radio disc jockey in Vietnam during the mid 60s, all of the other characters and most of the events portrayed were entirely fictional. Cronauer did in fact arrive in Vietnam following a transfer from Crete, taught English to locals on the side, and witnessed news cover ups, the rest was purely fictional events. In addition, Cronauer departed Vietnam with an honorable discharge simply as a result of his assignment expiring, and was not forced to leave due to any disciplinary reasons.
