The Emperor's apparatus that supports his head, as well as his ability to command the Force through his corpse, are similar to a main plot point from C.S. Lewis's 1945 sci-fi classic "That Hideous Strength," in which an evil organization artificially maintains the head of a psychically gifted criminal to access its visions. In the book, the head is rigged onto pumps and machines to help the organization find a source of ultimate power over the universe. In the movie, Palpatine has kept his own corpse alive to regain the power he alone once had.
