Ronny Yu originally turned down the directing job, because the script didn't indicate who won at the end and he wasn't a fan of either movies. He agreed to take the job when Robert Shaye told him he could make that decision himself. Ronny Yu then came up with the idea for Jason to hold Freddy's head at the end. Robert Shaye agreed, but wanted Freddy to wink at the audience.
