Jan de Bont was going to direct this film but personal problems with Steven Spielberg on his previous film, The Haunting, caused a major rift in which de Bont felt that Spielberg ruined his film with all the special effects and emphasis on the house itself rather than the film's psychological aspects. Spielberg then took over this film and had de Bont agree not to be involved in the film in any way. De Bont received a producer's credit and was paid for doing nothing.
