Paul Zimmerman wrote the screenplay in the 1970's and Robert DeNiro tried to get it made then but did not have the clout to get it made until almost ten years later. Zimmerman, unlike most writers who despise their works being edited and changed for a film adaptation, was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the film and even thought it was better than what he originally wrote.
