According to writer Bruce Joel Rubin, the script was heavily inspired by the Bardo Thodol (The Tibetan Book of the Dead), the biblical story of Jacob's ladder and Robert Enrico's Oscar-winning short film Un avvenimento sul ponte di Owl Creek (1961), based on the 1890 Ambrose Bierce short story.
