There's an early sign in the movie that Albert Johnson knew Bill Luce would betray and try to kill him: During their first meeting, they have a short, friendly chat and Bill Luce even warns him against the men on his trail and tells him to run away. And Albert Johnson appreciates the warning, but as he walks away, he doesn't turn his back to Bill. Instead he slowly takes a few steps backwards, with his rifle still pointed at Bill.
