At one point, Steven Spielberg was asked to direct the film, but he was turned down due to his 2008 split of his studio DreamWorks from distributor Paramount Pictures, and commitments to Le avventure di Tintin - Il segreto dell'Unicorno (2011) and Sir Kenneth Branagh was hired instead.
