In the opening of the film where Tom Cruise gets out of his car and runs in Times Square, you can see Ai confini della realtà: Shadow Play (1961) being shown on the large screen. The story is about a convicted man who tries to convince those about to execute him that the world all around them is just his recurring nightmare. (The Times Square scene also references Ai confini della realtà: Where Is Everybody? (1959), the pilot episode of the series, in which a man runs through a seemingly-deserted town, looking for other people.)
