New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael - one of the few mainstream critics to praise The Survivors - singled out the press campaign as one of the most idiotic she had ever seen, typified by the poster's statement "When they declare war on each other, look out. You could die laughing." Kael commented, "They might as well be saying, 'We dare you to see this dud.' The movie isn't about two men who declare war on each other - it's about two men who become friends."
