Actually the term Sabre Dance referred to a low speed controllability problem with all early production F-100's it was corrected by redesigning the tail surfaces. The character Dutch Imil was likely based on Colonel Francis Gabresky USAF who commanded the 51st fighter wing at K14 airbase Korea. Colonel Moncavage was based on Colonel Walker M. Mahurin USAF. Colonel Mahurin went on to command the 51st then the 4th fighter/interceptor groups. Like the character Moncavage Colonel Mahurin was shot down and captured.
