Charlton Heston was originally sought by director Richard Lester to play Athos, but Heston became (in the words of his memoir) "gloomy" about a four to five month shoot in Spain and refused a lead role but agreed to play a much smaller part because he liked the script. He was given the choice between playing the Duke of Buckingham or Cardinal Richelieu, and Heston chose the latter.
