San Francisco has a rich history of operatic tradition. Performances by many entertainers began during the gold rush years and were held at large numbers of "opera palaces" throughout the city. This continued until the 1906 earthquake destroyed much of the city. The current resident opera company began in 1923, with the ballet starting up a decade later. Both still perform at the War Memorial Opera House.
