The novel had a different ending to the ending in the movie. The novel ended with Dr. Phillippa Horwood doubting Liz's testimony that Mike died on the 16th day in the hole and that Liz was the sole survivor. Dr. Horwood soon discovers Martyn never existed and that Liz made up Martyn so she could pin the blame on someone else and this implies that Lisa also never existed and that Liz and Lisa are the same person.
