The SBD Dauntless' designation SBD comes from its description - Scout Bomber, Douglas (manufactured by Douglas). In the film, it is nearly equal in ability to the Japanese fighters. In reality, it was both slower and far less manoeuvrable. However, it was exceptionally swift and well-armed for a bomber, and very well regarded by crews for its reliability, versatility and ease of use. As a result, it was often referred to by a different name; Slow But Deadly.
