This movie opens with Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) attending an orchestral performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", specifically Felix Mendelssohn's Scherzo (Opus 21). The Scherzo serves as transition to Act II of William Shakespeare's play, in which the Puck soon warns Oberon of "night's swift dragons", who "cut the clouds full fast". This refers to a Greek myth, in which night is a chariot drawn by dragons whose eyes are always open and inescapable. It is worth noting that on stage (and in imagery far back as 1628) the Puck is often presented like a faun, a mythical being that usually otherwise plays a flute, as does the focus of Lecter's ire.
