As filming progressed, relations with the island's French administration and local residents were waning. To natives, Murnau's manner was brusque and dictatorial and he was inclined to a furious, shouting impatience over their seeming indolence. Parts of the story created a furor among the locals, chief among them a hereditary tahua named Tuiau who warned Murnau that his script insulted sacred tapus, or taboos. Tuiau allegedly leveled a curse against the filmmaker for violating their beliefs and for erecting his house on an ancient burial ground. This did prove to be the director's last film.
