Since the 2017 release of Get Out, fan theories have suggested that Get Out is a sequel to this film, with Catherine Keener reprising her role 18 years later, and Allison Williams playing the grown-up Emily (Malkovich's daughter). Get Out director Jordan Peele has responded to this by saying that it was not his intention when he created Get Out, but he still likes the theory, and has discussed it with Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze. Notable parallels include the theme of one person's consciousness taking over another person's body, and being trapped as a passive spectator inside a body (being "absorbed" in this film, the "sunken place" in Get Out).
