Chris Isaak previously appeared in Il silenzio degli innocenti (1991), which also concerned an FBI investigation, although he only played a SWAT team member. Anthony Hopkins was cast as Hannibal Lecter because director Jonathan Demme wanted him to play the evil counterpart to his character in The Elephant Man (1980), directed by David Lynch.
