Actor-writer-director Albert Brooks later had a critical hit with his black comedy film 'Mother' (1996) which was loosely based on his real-life mother-actress Thelma Bernstein. The picture starred Debbie Reynolds in the title role. Brook's real-life mother Thelma Bernstein his character Robert Cole's mother in 'Modern Romance' (1981).
