That belltower henchman bore a resemblance to the African American Joker Goon who stepped in and beat Commisioner James Gordon into unconsciousness when he attempted to attack the Joker with a pair of scissors after the latter shot his daughter, Barbara, and took him hostage on the Joker's orders in the 1988 graphic novel, Batman: The Killing Joke, which director Tim Burton used as inspiration for the film.
