The scene where Marko is transformed into Sandman is more or less faithful to his origin story in Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 #4. In both versions he is being chased by the police at night when he stumbles onto an experimental test site.In the comic he is exposed to radiation from a nuclear blast, while in the movie he is caught in a particle accelerator. Following the test, Marko is able to rearrange his molecules like grains of sand in order to alter his physical shape.
