No reason is given in the film for Icarus II having a massive atomic bomb for a payload, and not a more powerful hydrogen bomb like the sun itself. In the Clark Ashton Smith short story "Phoenix", set far in the future when the sun is dying, atomic bombs are used to restart solar chain reactions with the heavier elements that the sun needs to continue burning.
