Drill sergeants are never seen wearing campaign or "Smokey Bear" hats. Instead, they wear helmet liners like their trainees. These liners were relatively light weight and slid snugly into the steel helmet. Use of the campaign hat for drill sergeants began before World War One but was discontinued in 1942 and not re-introduced until 1964. The use of the helmet liner is correct. The helmet liner continued to be used, primarily for military police and ceremonial purposes well into the 1990s, when the Kevlar helmet, which had no detachable liner, was introduced to the force.
