Dunbar and the other mounted officers wear gold background shoulder straps (rank) on their coats or shirts & crossed sabers patches on their hats, both signifying Cavalry officers & troops, despite being attached to an Infantry unit. They should have worn powder/ sky blue background insignia as seen on the chevrons of the non-commissioned officers, & a bugle patch or brass on their kepi or slouch hat.
