The plot is loosely inspired by the Robert Ludlum novel "The Bourne Identity" (1980) which was made into a movie of its own a few years later (The Bourne Identity (2002)). A spy who hunts terrorists gets shot and almost drowns, wakes up with amnesia and uses clues to patch together their past and links to a shadowy government agency. Brian Cox, by the way, appears in both films.
